ILWU Local 13 Safety and Benefits Officer Dave Beeman accepted the AQMD “Promoting Good Environmental Stewardship” award at the Air Quality district’s 18th annual “Clean Air Awards” held Oct. 12th, 2010 at the Biltmore Hotel, in Los Angeles. The union was singled out for years of work in pressing for cleaner air in the harbor, including the unveiling in Jan. 2006 of the “Saving Lives” campaign in which the ILWU is demanding that all cargo vessels calling on the west coast reduce smokestack emissions by 20%.
