ILWU statement on the passing of Jimmy Nolan
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) was saddened to learn about the passing of Liverpool docker leader Jimmy Nolan.
The ILWU’s relationship with Brother Nolan dates back to the 1995-98 Liverpool dockers’ strike. As Merseyside Port Shop Stewards Chairman, Jimmy led the fight for the Liverpool dockers and helped rally support worldwide for the fight against privatization and casualization of dock work in Britain.
“Jimmy Nolan was a friend and comrade who represented the best traditions of militant docker unionism,” said ILWU International President Willie Adams. “In the mid-1990s, Jimmy’s leadership helped forge the bonds of international solidarity that continue to unite dock workers around the world to this day. We mourn the loss of Jimmy Nolan, and we will continue to the fight for the working-class values, militant unionism, and international solidarity that he exemplified.”
